"BOMBS AND CINDER": PINACATE
BIOSPHERE RESERVE
View across a lava field, from the rim of Crater
Elegante. The foreground shows large rocks thrown from
the erupting volcano, mixed with softer material
(brown-coloured tuff) from settled, compacted volcanic
ash. The middle distance shows an extensive black lava
field, with mountains behind.
Much of the desert floor in the Pinacate Biosphere
Reserve is covered with a layer of cinder, consisting of
light (air-filled) particles thrown from past volcanic
eruptions. The footprints in the image below show that in
some regions this cinder layer is very thin. But it
covers almost all the desert floor withinin the volcanic
region of the Reserve, and the thickest cinder deposits
are several metres deep.
