MOUNTAIN REGIONS As the elevation increases in desert regions, the typical desert plant community of low-lying areas is replaced by desert grassland, then by desert scrub and tree zones. Black bear and mountain lion frequent these regions and in winter they sometimes descend the mountain canyons to forage or hunt in the valley floors. They are protected species across the USA and Mexico. They also pose a hazard to hikers. This photograph was taken in the Big Bend National Park, Texas. Go to
