The American black bear, Ursus americanus, was once common throughout North America in a variety of habitats, including desert scrub. Most bears live in the higher mountainous regions, but there is a small, naturally occurring population in the Texas Big Bend region. These animals eat mainly vegetable matter (fruit, leaves, nuts) but also eat insects and occasionally small mammals. They are part of a larger population that extends across the Chihuahuan Desert regions of Mexico.
