PAPER SHEATH OF CHOLLA Most cholla species have a thin, paper-like sheath over the spines, which serves to reflect intense sunlight and protect the stem of the plant from overheating. In this image the large spine at the top has its sheath intact, whereas the sheath has been partly separated from the spine at the bottom. |
