SONORAN DESERT TOAD
The Sonoran Desert toad, also known as the Colorado River toad (Bufo alvarius), is restricted to desert regions of southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and northern Mexico. It is a large toad, ranging in size from 7 - 17 cm. It is olive green to brown, but with a creamy underside. It has distinctive elongated parotoid glands behind the eyes, which can release a potent toxin, and large white warts behind the jaw. It is common in the Sonoran Desert but is nocturnal and is active mainly in the summer rainy season. |
