BLADDER POD (Cleome isomeris)
This native Californian shrub (up to
1.5 metres tall) is drought-tolerant and found on coastal
bluffs and in desert washes. Its most conspicuous feature
is the inflated bladder (see image below) which surrounds
the seeds and becomes papery when mature. The detached
pods are easily blown by wind for seed dispersal. |
