BARREL CACTUS FLOWERS The image shows details of the flowers and the very broad, flattened central spines of one species of barrel cactus, serving both as defence from herbivores and as a screen from intense sunlight, to prevent the plant from overheating. Most barrel cacti flower regularly, every year, once they reach an appropriate age. The flowers are produced as a ring, close to the apical growing point of the cactus. Go to
