WHITE-TAILED DEER (Odocoileus virginianus)

White-tailed deer are the most common deer in America, ranging from Southern Canada down to Central America. Unlike their close relative - the mule deer - white-tailed deer occur at higher elevations in mountain regions. They are fairly uncommon in deserts but occur in parts of the Great Basin Desert of Utah and Colorado, the upper, eastern part of the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, and upper regions of the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico and South Texas. The term white-tailed refers to their distinctive white rump, although the tail itself is not white.
