BAJA BARREL CACTI

BARREL CACTI OF BAJA CALIFORNIA

Severl barrel cacti occur in the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. Some are endemic (unique to this region). Some steep rocky slopes near the north of the peninsula have an extremely high density of barrel cacti, which are the dominant plants. In other places, such as the shallower hillside slope in this image, the barrel cacti share the habitat with a range of other cacti (senita on the far right; several chollas; cardon cacti in the distance) and the boojum tree. At least five barrel cacti are visible in this image - they are the stout, cylindrical cacti with the red colour conferred by their spines.
